Saoirse Ronan will play the title role in period drama Mary Queen Of Scots.
The screenplay has been written by Michael Hirst, who penned the award-winning Elizabeth and its sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age starring Cate Blanchett, who appeared opposite Irish actress Saoirse in Hanna.
Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are currently looking for directors, Deadline reports.
Mary Queen of Scots was the cousin of Elizabeth I, and was crowned the queen of Scotland before she was a year old and went on to live a life filled with drama.
Her first husband became France's king and she became queen consort in 1559.
When she married the man suspected of killing her second husband, she was forced to abdicate her throne to her one-year-old son.
She claimed to be the rightful queen of England, a view embraced by Catholics, and was eventually beheaded for plotting to assassinate her cousin Elizabeth, in a bid to take the English throne.
