No more bad hair days?

Do you suffer with frizzy hair at the merest hint of rain? Does a hot, sticky day leave your hair looking lacklustre? A permanent blowdry could be the answer to all of our bad hair days. Liz Frost puts her tresses to the test.

Ever had one of those days where your hair just won’t behave itself?  For me every day is one of those days. My mischievous locks frizz up if so much as one raindrop enters the atmosphere.
It isn’t just the wet days either: the sun turns them into a parched tangled mess and humidity can leave me looking like the bride of Frankenstein.
I manage to make myself presentable with the help of a hairdryer and straighteners, but my efforts are time consuming and not always fruitful – a stray gust of wind and I’m back where I started.
Let’s face it, I’d much rather spend an extra half hour in bed in the mornings than wrestling with my unruly barnet. So when I heard about a new treatment that promised silky smooth locks that last for three months, I hot-footed it to Daniel Hersheson’s hair salon in Mayfair faster than you could say “short back and sides please”.
Smooth my hair!
In front of the mirror, my stylist, Amir, explained what sort of treatment would work best on my sort of hair – colour treated to within an inch of its frizz-filled life. So after a quick examination of a lock or two, I’m ushered to the sinks where his assistant shampoos and conditions my hair.
I’m embarrassed at what a haystack my hair is; I can feel her tugging on my tangles as she tries to run a comb through them. I’m used to spending ages teasing and unknotting and I forget just how disobedient my locks can be. I tell myself those tangles will be long gone soon.
Back in the chair, Amir begins sectioning my hair off and carefully applying the magic frizz-busting potion. It smells like heavenly chocolate fudge sauce but as well as the divine aroma he tells me it contains Keratin, a protein which the hair contains naturally.
The treatment stays on for about 10 minutes and after rough drying it, Amir begins meticulously blow-drying it section by section around a barrel brush, finishing off with straightening irons to seal the treatment into each hair shaft – an essential part of the process. Around an hour later, even the little fluffy curls around my hairline have disappeared.  I can’t help but bask in my hair’s new shininess.
The long-term benefits
I had worried it might look too straight, but unlike other straightening treatments, the permanent blowdry doesn’t eradicate curls and leave the hair poker straight, it just improves the texture of the hair so if you have natural curls, they’re more defined and a little more relaxed.
I leave with strict instructions from Amir to prevent my hair gremlins returning.  For the next three days, I mustn’t get it wet, use hair bands or clips or wash my hair.
The prospect of three days without washing my hair isn’t too appealing and I can’t even tie it up because a hair band could leave me with a permanent kink, so I keep myself well-hidden.  But when I wash my hair for the first time there’s no need for the usual battle with my brush and straighteners, I’m amazed at how a quick blow from the hairdryer leaves my hair looking like polished glass.
But at £200 a pop is it something only A-listers can indulge in?
Not necessarily. The permanent blow dry is extremely popular and not just for special occasions either, many girls go back regularly for a top up. The beauty of it is the more you have it done, the longer it will last. And every time my hair remains unscathed after a shower of rain or humid day on the tube I can’t help but think it’s worth every single penny.
